Air India Resumes Shanghai-New Delhi Flights
Air India, India’s flagship carrier, has relaunched its highly anticipated direct flights between Shanghai and New Delhi, with the inaugural service taking off today from Shanghai Pudong International Airport. This major development, welcomed by the Consulate General of India in Shanghai under Consul General Pratik Mathur, bridges a nearly six-year gap since services halted in early 2020, ushering in renewed momentum for India-China ties.
The first flight carried over 230 passengers aboard a modern Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, symbolizing a powerful restart of people-to-people, business, and institutional links. Consul General Pratik Mathur highlighted this as a “tangible expression of renewed momentum in India-China engagement,” stressing how vital enhanced air connectivity is for trade, tourism, academic exchanges, and contacts—especially with East China’s vibrant Yangtze River Delta region, a global economic powerhouse.
Air India now operates this route four times a week, leveraging its advanced Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner fleet with upgraded cabins, 18 flat-bed Business Class seats, and 238 spacious Economy seats for superior comfort on the long-haul journey. The relaunch aligns with growing travel demand post-suspension, supporting commercial growth, educational collaborations, and cultural interactions between the two nations.
This milestone follows diplomatic efforts to restore bilateral air links, with Air India positioning Shanghai as its 48th international destination. It reflects broader recovery in cross-border mobility and confidence in high-value routes. The Consulate General of India in Shanghai reaffirmed its dedication to initiatives boosting trade, investment, tourism, education, and cultural exchanges.
For travelers, this direct connection simplifies journeys between New Delhi (Indira Gandhi International Airport) and Shanghai Pudong (PVG), cutting transit times and enhancing convenience for business professionals, students, tourists, and families. Air India’s Dreamliner offers enhanced onboard services, modern entertainment, and reliable performance on this key Asia route.
The resumption signals optimism for India-China relations, with potential for further expansions like planned Mumbai-Shanghai services later in 2026 (subject to approvals). As bilateral engagement gains steam, this flight restoration stands as a concrete step toward deeper economic and cultural integration.
