Ranchi Nationals To Decide Glasgow Commonwealth Games Squad
The 29th National Senior Athletics Federation Competition (Indian national athletics event) will become India’s most crucial track and field meet of the year as it doubles up as the final selection trial for the Commonwealth Games.
The mega event will be held in Ranchi, Jharkhand, from May 22 to May 25, determining who earns the coveted India jersey for Glasgow.
New Delhi, India — Indian athletics enters a decisive phase as the 29th National Senior Athletics Federation Competition takes center stage, carrying enormous stakes for elite and emerging athletes alike. Scheduled from May 22 to May 25 in Ranchi, the competition will serve as the final selection trials for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, beginning July 23.
The announcement was made by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) while unveiling the qualification standards for track and field events for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. According to the federation, only a limited and strictly regulated contingent will represent India on the Glasgow track.
Limited Slots, Fierce Competition
AFI senior vice president Anju Bobby George confirmed that team size restrictions imposed by the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee have significantly raised the bar for selection.
“As per protocol, the total athletics squad cannot exceed 32 athletes, including 16 women competitors,” Anju Bobby George stated.
She further clarified that the Glasgow Commonwealth Games will feature a reduced number of athletic events, making qualification standards even more stringent.
“The Ranchi competition will be decisive. Only athletes who achieve the qualification mark in their respective events in May will be considered for selection,” she added.
This makes the Ranchi meet a do-or-die moment for India’s top runners, jumpers, and throwers.
Ranchi Meet: More Than Just Commonwealth Trials
Beyond Commonwealth Games selection, the National Senior Athletics Federation Competition will also function as a qualification window for the 2026 Asian U23 Athletics Championships, providing younger athletes a rare dual opportunity to stake their claim on the international stage.
For many emerging athletes, Ranchi represents a career-defining platform, offering a chance to break into senior international competition while competing alongside established national stars.
India’s Recent Commonwealth Success Raises Expectations
India enters the Glasgow cycle with confidence following a strong showing at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where the athletics contingent secured eight medals.
The highlight of that campaign was Eldhose Paul, who clinched gold in the men’s triple jump, while India’s steeplechase ace Avinash Sable delivered a memorable silver medal performance. These results reinforced India’s growing stature in global athletics and set higher expectations for the upcoming Games.
A Packed 2026 International Calendar
The 2026 season is shaping up to be one of the busiest in Indian athletics history. While the Commonwealth Games are important, the Asian Games in September remain the federation’s primary focus.
“The Asian Games in Japan will be our main target this year,” Anju Bobby George confirmed.
To prepare for the demanding calendar, the AFI will also send a national squad to the World Relays in May, to be held in Botswana.
World Relays Trials In Chandigarh
Selection trials for the World Relays will take place during the third National Open Relay Competition on March 28 in Chandigarh.
“Foreign teams are also expected to compete in Chandigarh,” Anju revealed, underlining the event’s rising international significance.
This exposure is expected to benefit Indian sprinters and relay teams ahead of major global competitions.
Inter-State Championships To Decide Asian Games Squad
The 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, scheduled from June 24 to June 28 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, will act as the final selection trials for the Asian Games.
Athletes who miss out in Ranchi will still have an opportunity to make their case for the Asian Games squad in Bhubaneswar, keeping competition intense throughout the season.
